Athens-Clarke County Police announced on Friday the arrest of a suspect who was allegedly involved in a shooting the previous day in the parking lot of a shopping mall on Alps Road west of Athens.

No one was injured, police said, but a bullet reportedly shattered the glass front door of Palm Beach Tan, 130 Alps Road, with the bullet passing just over an employee’s head.

No one in the tanning salon or anywhere else in the mall was injured, according to Athens-Clarke County Police Acting Chief Jerry Saulters.

ACCPD Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett said police communications officers early Friday evening “received multiple 911 calls in reference to shots being fired in the area.

“Callers indicated that the occupants of two separate vehicles were shooting at each other,” he said, “descriptions of the vehicles were given and responding officers made contact with a white Honda Accord that matched the description of one of the vehicles involved.

“A traffic check was carried out on this vehicle,” Barnett said. “During the traffic stop, officers located a stolen handgun.” As a result, Johnathan Matthew Taylor, 26, of Lavender Road was arrested and charged with theft while harboring stolen property.

Barnett added that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected.

According to a jail deputy, Taylor was released on Saturday afternoon after posting $5.00 bond.
