A 3.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 32 minutes ago 32 km northeast of Sparta, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 14.5 km below the epicenter near Sparta, Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece, late at night on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 10:52 p.m. local time. The magnitude and other parameters of the quake may still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later released by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) with magnitude 3.0 and the RaspberryShake Citizen Seismograph Network with magnitude 3.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as a very weak tremor include Leonidio (pop. 3,000) located 7 km from the epicenter and Geraki (pop. 1,300) at 17 km. In Astros (2,200 inhab., 30 km away), Vlachiotis (2,400 inhab., 31 km away), Sparta (16,200 inhab., 32 km away), Skala (2,800 inhab., 33 km away), Tripoli (26,600 inhabitants, 55 km away), Argos (22,200 inhabitants, 55 km away) and Kalamata (54,100 inhabitants, 61 km away), the earthquake was probably not felt.
