Earthquake 4.2 on October 5, 10:54 a.m. (GMT +3)

A shallow 4.2 magnitude earthquake was reported in the morning near Kos, Dodecanese, southern Aegean Sea, Greece.
According to the Athens National Observatory (NOA), the earthquake struck on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 10:54 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 13.4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
A second report was later released by the Kandilli Observatory and the Istanbul Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI-RETMC), which classified it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake. A third agency, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same magnitude 4.1 earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could be felt in Nikia (48 inhabitants) located 8 km from the epicenter, Kardamena (1,900 inhabitants) at 31 km, Kefalos (2,500 inhabitants) at 33 km and Antimacheia (2,300 inhabitants) at 35 km.
Other towns close to the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as very weak tremors include Kos (19,200 inhabitants) located 45 km from the epicenter, Kalymnos (12,300 inhabitants) 52 km away, Turgutreis ( 16,500 inhabitants) 58 km to 64 km, Bodrum (39,300 inhabitants) 64 km and Rhodes (56,100 inhabitants) 95 km.
