Tourist arrivals in Greece in September reached record levels of 2019, far exceeding the goal hoped for by the New Democracy government, thereby boosting economic recovery.

Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias told SKAI radio that around 8.6 million tourists arrived in Greece between January and August 2021, up from 4.8 million in the same period in 2020, an increase of 79 , 2%.

In August 2021 alone, 4 million tourists came to Greece, a 125.5% increase from the essentially closed 2020 summer season as the COVID-19 pandemic raged.

In September, some 2,352,788 tourists visited the country, an increase of 110% from the same month a year earlier.

“We have reached our 2021 target of reaching 50% of 2019 tourism revenue,” Kikilias noted, said the Athens-Macedonia State News Agency (NAMA).

“This is the result of a gigantic effort by the government,” he added, “and of Greece’s successful rebranding of new health protocols, and how we have handled the pandemic of coronavirus, which made visitors feel safe “.

He did not mention that the country is truly insecure due to a resurgence of cases that have resulted in record numbers, with intensive care units (ICUs) in public hospitals filling up quickly and deaths rising again. .
