ATHENS – Expressing confidence that his party will comfortably win the next elections whenever they are held, main opposition leader SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, severely criticized the government in a lengthy interview with the newspaper “Efimerida ton Syntakton ”published on Saturday, declaring that people were“ tired of the disconnect ”between the reality they are experiencing and the image presented in the media.

He attacked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, claiming that “rudeness, fake news, slime bashing and character assassinations are in his political DNA”.

Tsipras also criticized the government’s handling of the fires and the pandemic and said the overall political responsibility lay with the prime minister and saying that “at the head of the country is a denier of reality”.

“Society is now suffering under a government which, in two years, has not only razed everything, but constantly insults the intelligence of the citizens with unprecedented propaganda. of Greece is on fire, Mitsotakis does everything perfectly. And whenever that rage overflows, even over the microphone of live television reporting, an opinion poll pops up that shows us how much the ruling party has risen in public opinion. at some point, however, citizens tire of the disconnect between the reality they live in and the images they are bombarded with, ”he said.

This visible wear and tear of the government was not enough, however, and SYRIZA must also convince the voters that it was ready to undertake a governance of a different type, based on a radical realism which was not only willing but also capable of “giving content. contemporary to the need and the idea of change, ”he added.

Tsipras expressed the opinion that a so-called “anti-SYRIZA front” is in decline, despite pro-government media efforts to maintain it, while anti-government sentiment grows stronger and is only fueled. by “investing in propaganda ignoring the needs of the people”.

He reiterated that SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance will strive to unite with other progressive forces in the country and the bet was for the left to show the way not only with ideas but with actions from a position of responsibility, that improve people’s lives and provide “space for social justice and help end the climate crisis.”

Tsipras also accused the government of failing to learn from its mistakes in dealing with destructive forest fires: “Mr. Mitsotakis, after the biggest environmental disaster in the country’s history, said everything was fine. past and that he had not seen any Therefore, not only do I see no desire for change, but not even a fundamental sense of responsibility towards those who have seen the place where they live and their property reduced to ashes . “

He accused the prime minister of locking up a largely comprehensive forest protection and civil defense reorganization plan left by SYRIZA, based on the Goldammer report that the prime minister also approved, in order to reinstate officials partisans at the head of a problematic and already failing state mechanism. He also accused the government of promoting all the individuals who had been dismissed as responsible for the Mati disaster, without providing any convincing explanation.

When asked why he had not demanded the resignation of officials, Tsipras said replacing a failing minister with another was pointless when failing policies and a doomed organizational structure remained intact.

On the pandemic front, he said the government had lost the most important weapon, which was the trust of society, because it was unable to convince anyone and could not unite but only divide.

“It is now up to the people and to us, the forces of the opposition, to unite, to convince and to save what can be saved, especially human lives. With unity and solidarity, we will do everything possible to do so. achieve, “he said.
